Much can be said and has been said about why Haiti was in the condition it was in politically, socially and spiritually before the earthquake but let’s not forget one thing – the blood of Jesus Christ. There is no remission of sins without the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ. Calvary made a way for all people – black, white, rich and poor to have a relationship with God and to have not only eternal life but a life on this earth lived in freedom and at the highest level.
Haitians are a people of deep religious faith. Many gave their lives obtaining freedom as a nation. Whether you believe it or not many Christians live in Haiti. During this difficult time, many Haitians are gathering to pray and to sing hymns. They are praising God in the mist of their devastating circumstances and they will derive strength from their faith in God. I personally know that prayer is a way of life for thousands of Haitians who seek God every day praying for their nation, their needs and even pray for us who live in this wonderful country with so many opportunities. The earthquake has given us, the body of Christ an opportunity to check ourselves. Are we holding on to any prejudices that we need to let go of? God created man, all men, and he called it good. Do we love our neighbor as we love ourselves? The devastation is obvious and the recovery will be a long process but are we doing all we can do? The Bible tells us over and over again that when Jesus saw suffering he had compassion. He even wept at the tomb of Lazarus. He does not despise the affliction of the afflicted. His goal is to restore and to heal. When you see suffering what is your goal? We are all sinners saved by grace, but do we forget that and judge or cast blame? Let’s replace judgment with compassion. That’s the first step. God said, "if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from Heaven, forgive their sins and heal their land." What if God heard the prayers of the saints in Haiti and is preparing to heal their land? As Haiti digs out from under the rubble, let us, the body of Christ, dig the church out of the stereotyped and prejudicial thinking that has caused us to become ineffective at a time when the world needs us the most. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by!
